I had a career in advertising and must thank you for your wonderful walk down Memorable Campaigns Lane! I lived through the airbrush craze 🤦🏼♀️ and often couldn’t see myself in the pages of those magazines.
As I’ve gotten older, anti-aging has become full on age acceptance and I’ve come to love❤️ my aging skin. It shows life, character, wisdom and essential self-care.
I am so happy you loved the flashback! Thank you for reading, and for being a fantastic role model in aging — the more we show the next generation to embrace it for all of its merits, the less fearful they will be … and the narrative can finally change. xx
What’s interesting about aging is I feel more empowered than ever before. I’m no longer afraid to express my opinion, because my opinions matter. Every woman’s does and we need to hear our voices rise in unison.
And, I am in the best shape of my life!💪🏼 Aging can be amazing.
Thanks Christine! I’ve built a podcast around moms reinventing themselves beyond raising kids and we always get into the wisdom, grace and lived experience that come with those added years and miles! Not to mention the rich skillset we all have from those mom years. (Check it out: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mom-to-more/id1693877606)
This is exactly what I needed to read this morning....your writings are very positive and aligned with every woman in our generation and beyond......it has been challenging to say the least now with social media and announcing a new break through treatment or product to fix "our aging skin and body" - Accepting ourselves as we are and every flaw is empowering...it took me cancer to settle on this but it is true. Being in the fashion industry for over 30 years, I had always refrained from magazines to not derail from my own self image - it was my shield but now with social media, I find it hard to escape it all so sometimes I struggle and I worry about my daughters. I have kept them off social for now but I know this will shift soon as they get older and I just need to remind them daily, that they are worth it.....they are amazing - JUST LIKE YOU, mama!
You are so true to yourself — it’s a thing of beauty. I’m sorry that it took a crisis to get there, but love seeing you shine with The Fondle Project. The protective care for your daughters and the love language you are raising them with is everything. You really are amazing. xx
Growing up, I never felt like the beauty industry spoke to me. Magazines and ads seemed to press insecurities upon me, and I quickly became aware of how they could deeply harm my self-image. I’m so grateful for the progress made in the past few decades, as I’ve found brands that resonate with the person I am now. I’ve also come across writers like you, who articulate the complexity of aging as a woman in our culture. It's validating, therapeutic, and insightful and I will absolutely be influenced by you and your positive messaging. You too are amazing!
JoLynn — you have brought me to tears. I just can’t thank you enough for the unwavering support and kindness. And, I’m with you that it’s wonderful to see some brands embrace what women need to see and hear — YOUR brand being one of them, as it stands for healthy skin and uplifting ourselves with self care; and the impetus for Proteger has enormous heart like its founders. xx
Christine, this was absolutely fascinating to read – both from their perspective of a Brit Gen X beauty consumer, who remembers the power of those slogans
(and got nostalgic at the mention of Mademoiselle, which I bought from the international newsstands in London!, and brands like Hard Candy!!), and as a journalist. So interesting to have your insights, from having worked on the Olay campaign, and I had no idea about the evolution of the L’Oreal slogan (or Andie Macdowell’s initial hesitation).
I could not agree with you more about the beauty , power and importance of messages by trailblazing brands such as Jones Road (and 💯 re: Miracle Balm!). Bobbi is an inspiration. And yes, ambassadors such as Kate Winslet are doing so much to promote positive messaging around the beauty of aging, too. (Also, I need to check out Sarah Creal’s range.) Thank you so much for this deep dive, and championing beauty at every age. 📣🙌 xxxx

Jenni — Thank you so much for this wonderful feedback! It means so much coming from you! xx
I’ve been an Oil of Olay gal since I was 17, so 40 years. I always get the SPF 15, and it’s kept my skin looking great. Super article, thank you.💕
Thank you, Sheila!
